 In the beginning, Mekong Plus only had only one small project, Tiên Thành. But little by little the number of project increased, the local team in Vietnam enlarged: it amounts today to more than 180 people and leads 4 significative programs.
In 1995, Bernard Kervyn was invited by the Dr Duong Quynh Hoa and Oxfam-Belgium to bring -along with the team of Vietnam Plus, his support to the development of a micro-credit program in Tuc Trung (Dinh Quan). Then this program spread to the neighboring district, in Dúc Linh. And then further again, in Tánh Linh. In 2000 it was necessary to withdraw from Dinh Quán because of conflicts with some local authorities. In late 2001, Vietnam Plus started its action in the Mekong delta and today works in Hâu Giang. In 2007 we expanded in Cambodia and we changed name for Mekong Plus. Overall, our programs impact more than 200.000 people every year!
Little by little, some activities were interrupted, due to a lack of impact: the literacy program for example. But new ones were added, like the theater, the peasant groups... In the beginning, the programs were more expensive. Today, thanks to the involvement of people and the team's experience, we make a lot more with less. Several activities are definitely viable and we can decrease our support.
Docteur Duong Quynh Hoa, with her extensive experience and the projects that she implemented, influenced a lot Mekong Plus. The Director of the Pediatrics Development Center and Health in HCMV(CPDS) until 1999, she was a key person for a number of NGOs.
