In the Khmer villages almost nobody has a clean latrine, access to clean water is very difficult, far away. In Vietnam, after 9 years of program in Dúc Linh, 25% of the households have a clean latrine, and hygiene has increased tremendously.
We work at different levels: promotion of cheap yet clean latrines, of wells and water filters, of biogas ... Training of women's and farmers' groups. There is vast program with 127 primary schools -52.000 children, now progressively extended to kindergarten. The environment is cleaned by the children which has a great impact on the public.
There is almost no more malaria in the plains. Mosquito nets are impregnated with insecticide for better protection: they are often torn, 3-5 people are squeezed inside, so mosquitoes can still bite! Instead of impregnating the nets for free (like the government does), with an expensive insecticide, we prefer to cover more villages by making people pay 3/4 of the cost.
One must be persistant, only long term efforts are rewarded. Instead of 50-90% people infested with worms, in Dúc Linh when we first started the program, today, after 9 years, about 20% people are infested, thanks to better latrines and hygiene.
A government survey has indicated that less than 20% of the medical staff washes their hands after going to the toilet. In the delta less than half of them had a latrine at home. So we organized a competition between the communes, for the proportion of medical staff having a proper toilet!
In the Mekong delta the latrine are above the fish pond, "to feed the fish". This is forbidden by the government -the worms sneak out of the ponds, but it is still extremely common practice. We propose everywhere cheap 13 € latrines. For thepoor we also provide an incentive. |
